Baptism

We are excited that you are interested in baptism. It's an important step of obedience for every person who has trusted Christ as their Savior and Lord. The information below explains baptism and the steps necessary to be baptized at Congdon Street.

Who should be baptized?

Anyone who has trusted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior qualifies for baptism. It is the first step of obedience for a believer, and an opportunity to go public with your faith, identifying yourself as a Christ-follower. If you have any questions about how to begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call the church at 401-421-4032 or email us at info@congdonstreet.org

What Baptism Symbolizes

Baptism symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and what took place in your heart upon salvation…

– Acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
– Sharing in His death and resurrection illustrated by going under the water
(dead to our old way of life), then rising again (new life)
– Being symbolically washed clean, our sins forgiven

What is Christianity?

God, through the sacrifice of His Son, offers salvation and life to anyone who believes in Him. Salvation is a gift of grace not by works. Christians are people who believe that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs only when a person places their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as the sufficient payment for their sin. Believing in Christ for salvation involves:

FAITH For by grace I am saved through faith.
TRUST Letting go of my self-directed life to Christ’s life.
REPENTANCE Changing my mind and life direction.
LORDSHIP Confessing Christ as my savior and lord.

Answers to Common Questions

Is my salvation dependent on being baptized?

Jesus instructed us to be baptized; it is not necessary for salvation, it demonstrates submission to God.

I was sprinkled as a baby. Does that count?

In some denominations, infant christening represents a decision made by parents that they are dedicating their child to Christ. Much like the Baby Dedications we celebrate at Congdon Street. However, being dedicated or sprinkled does not make you a Christian. Only a personal acceptance of Christ’s death on the cross for your sins can do that.

Why immersion?

We immerse at Congdon Street because we believe Scripture shows how Jesus modeled that for us as the way to publicly acknowledge our faith in Him.
